"I wouldn't say this is per the norm, exactly," Akechi confessed, his hand twitching as he subconsciously reached for the rapier at his side. "But I have a good idea as to what comes next."

No sooner than the words had left his mouth than the darkness seeping out of the corridor's nooks and edges began to take form, crawling inwards and shrouding the hotel's other guests with the deepest of blacks. Occasionally, another shade could be seen wrestling with the masses of darkness, representative of a different vice or fear. But it was clear that the darkness was in control here.

The nearest tenants began to creep forward, their silhouettes becoming gangly and their limbs chaotic. Before long, their shapes were utterly unrecognisable.

Not a sound could be heard now, other than the chatter between investigative partners, as if something had quickly drowned out all the life and soul that had previously been on display. And the creatures were getting closer.

"Well, that is... definitely more of them than I would have liked to run into."

Junko instinctively took a step back, her eyes wide in surprise. She thought she had seen the darkness move from the corner of her eye just before, but the wavering silouhettes facing them were beyond anything her wild imagination could come up with. The malleable darkness edging ever closer seemed to encourage them to stay away, their wobbly limbs extending towards them with a menacing promise, but this didn't discourage the girl.

In fact, it did just the opposite.

With confident steps and a loud "Uooh", Junko walked closer to the shadows, circling them with a quick pace and the occasional crouch to get a better look. Whatever fear could've been seen in her eyes had been replaced with childish curiosity, and her wonder could be heard in her voice.

"Akechi-kun, Akechi-kun!! What in the hell are THESE!? The way they're melting is super CUTE! What are ya gonna do!?"

Re: Descend - An Escape Adventure

Although he had taken a couple of steps back already, it was clear from his face that Junko had taken Akechi completely by surprise. Or maybe it would have been more appropriate to describe him as being utterly baffled, incapable of processing the flippant way in which the eagerly inquisitive enigma had moved swiftly from his side and into the belly of the beast. The creeping creatures whipping their stubby heads around, growing increasingly abstract in form, were also distracted by this unusual behaviour and had all begun to encroach on Junko instead.

And yet, Akechi noted, it would not have been altogether incorrect to admire her willingness to face this evident danger head-on. No, it was actually more than that. Her drive and innate madness were both clearly on-display but the young fashionista displayed a noticeable degree of skill all the same. The way she ducked and shifted through the oncoming horde betrayed her impressive speed and agility - both of which would have been dismissable had Goro not already flicked through her school file. She had not been notable for any such feats.

Why would a girl like that not have joined some kind of extracurricular group? Why not, unless she preferred to lay low?

"Whilst I appreciate that you're eager, I've also heard it said that a sense of self-preservation goes a long way."

This train of thought had Akechi's curiosity piqued. Nevertheless, it would have been foolish to allow this display of character to potentially end with casualties. With this in mind, the suited detective splayed out his gloved hand, clutching what might have been the skull of the nearest foe. Its dark, sinful form began melting apart entirely to reveal a beastly head with long, almost authoritive horns protruding from the top. The monster's eyes gleamed with what could only have been spite before a blinding light pulsed out from underneath the detective's hand, shattering the demon into a million dark fragments.

The next second, not a trace remained. The second after that, Goro Akechi had unsheathed a metallic saber from somewhere behind him and thrust it into the fray. It was worth noting, of course, that the saber's blade was entirely bathed in a strange, shining light. This seemed to put the Shadows on edge, for they were most definitely Shadows. The writhing masses of black seemed to collectively leap back into the corridor, exploding with anxiety and rage as their false appearances came apart, just the same as that of the creature with the horns.

At the end of it all, a handful of the Shadows were revealed in form, fearful of the human that had just killed their brother-in-arms. And yet, fear was just one emotion in a torrent that was quickly overpowered by roaring fury.

The corridor was somewhat narrow and so forced the new antagonists into a chaotic kind of queue. This order collapsed almost immediately, of course, as the group began to push past one another in an attempt to move forward and claw the humans' eyes out. It consisted of five separate entities, though three looked human themselves and the other two were the same type of horned demon as before, though all of them were floating some distance off the floor.

"It's no surprise, really," lamented Akechi, readying his blade with what must have seemed like newfound confidence. There was a glassy, indifferent look in his eyes as he began to move forward to meet the mob. "High society always seems to be rather touch-and-go for me. Hotels, cruise liners... Casinos in particular."

Junko giggled, and despite Akechi's comment about self-preservation, it seemed to be aimed at nothing in particular.

She tracked the detective's movements from her position, apparently not bothered by the unpleasant company she'd so willingly chose to approach. Unfortunately, her time with them had to be cut short when Akechi destroyed that first shadow; she understood how much of a liability she'd be, just roaming around, so Junko hopped back to his side. The grotesque display in front of them, as well as the detective's now apparent fencing abilities didn't seem to faze her one bit.

The rest of the shadows had taken a consistent form by then. Black, long horned demons and floating Hindu maidens were closing in on them, many emotions (mostly rage) displayed on their monstruous faces. Junko hid behind Akechi and put a hand on his shoulder, pretending to act scared, like he was going to believe a sign of fear from her after her previous display. She patted him forward encouragingly nonetheless, another small giggle escaping her lips. If Akechi'd been paying attention all the time she'd been with her, he could've probably ascertain by then that she was about to make fun of him.

"Woah... I don't really get all the dramatic chuuni nonsense you're spouting, but... Go get 'em, Akechi-kun! Was that a lightsaber just now? Pierce through their weaknesses just right! Would you rather be called Skywalker, then? Hmm, maybe that's too heroic..."

"Well... it's complicated. I'd imagine back home is fairly different to where you're from. We have a lot of super powered people, so the court system has had to sort of change regarding crimes like that. I guess the thing is, a lot of these criminals, like Electro tend to not really worry about hiding evidence. Not to mention their costumes are usually pretty bright and obvious. Subtlety isn't really a strong point for a lot of them." As he says this in his bright red and blue costume he glances over at Adachi on the phone.

"The cases are usually fairly open and close. Granted... keeping them in prison is another matter altogether."

Monika finishes tweeting... however she was tweeting and sighs.

(Hmm. I've got my ticket to the next floor... how should I kill some time? Oh!)
Monika finishes whispering to herself and  walks down the hallway until she comes face to face with everyone's favorite elevator attendant.

"Hey, Megaira. How are you holding up?" She slowly pulls the apple out of her jacket. "... I can't go down ahead of everyone else, can I?"

Now, now, now... Aren't these some interesting developments unfolding here?

As Edgeworth and Spiderman conversed about their approaches to law enforcement and Adachi phoned Hitsugi to to turn off the waters, Aleka listened in on their conversation. She seemed quite deeply interested.

"Hm..."

"..."

After she'd observed her quiet participation for a while, Aqua approached the girl.

"Say, Aleka... Are you interested in this sort of talk?" She asked.

"Hm?" As if snapped out of a trance, Aleka looked up. "Oh... Well..." She seemed a little flustered.

Aqua put a hand on her shoulder. "It's just, you look like you're following the conversation pretty intently... Me, I don't really understand what they're talking about, to be honest. Do you?"

"..." Aleka stayed quiet for a bit. She seemed hesitant to speak about what she was thinking, or perhaps she had trouble putting her thoughts into words. Eventually, though, she replied.

"Ethics are fascinating. But they're scary too." Aleka says. "Laws decide over people's fates. They're supposed to be clear and just. The system needs to account for the standards of its society, like what Mr. Edgeworth and Mr. Spiderman are talking about. But if there's even just one situation they don't account for exactly, it becomes difficult to decide what's really 'just'. Things become... muddled. And then it's all up to just a few people to decide what is right. Then, there's also the problem of whether or not people can even actually judge one another..."

She lowered her head and sighs.

"It's all really complicated, but... That's kind of what makes it interesting. Even if it scares me."

"For something that scares you, you know quite a bit about it," Aqua said.

"..." Aleka shrunk away a little. "I dunno..." she mumbled. "I think... I think I don't know much at all..."

When Aqua heard that, she gave no reply, only a solemn look of acknowledgement. These words, they reminded her of someone she knew. Someone very important to her. She took the girl's hand and squeezed it a little.

"Don't worry. You'll learn with time," she told her with a smile.

And Aleka smiled back. Just a little.

Meanwhile, in the hallways of the hotel, Monika had come face to face with Megaira.

"..." The short woman with the long, dark locks refused to make her face as much as twitch at the sight of Monika. It was rock-solid as ever.

"This elevator will only leave once all keys have been gathered, as you must be quite aware by now. There are no exceptions." she stated. "There's still one key left not yet retrieved, is there not? If you want to speed all this up, you should perhaps focus on helping that key be retrieved. In fact, you may be more equipped than some others here to do so."

...There! Megaira's eyes slanted slightly.

"I would be highly surprised if you, of all people, did not know how to solve the puzzle, after all."

Her face returned back to the way it'd been before.

"Of course, come to think. Currently one piece of the puzzle isn't technically on this floor anymore..." she pondered. Did she seem slightly... annoyed? Megaira sighed. "...I will give you a chance to try your luck and move things along. What do you think should be done now?"

Spidey seemed a bit shocked. "Huh? No, no I don't 'dispense justice' like that! Who do you think I am, the Punisher or something? Yeah, he stood trial, various times. The only problem is, well the authorities don't tend to do a great job of keeping them behind bars. Even when they build places like the Vault to hold super powered prisoners they seem to be able to get out. It can make it all feel a bit pointless sometimes. But I'd never take someone's life or something. I mean... unless we're talking about something that threatens the whole of humanity, some sort of godlike alien invader or something. I've always been lucky I guess and managed to find an alternative the rare times I have faced godlike beings, but, if it really came to that. Well I don't know what I'd do. I'd like to think I'd not but, well I couldn't just let everyone die either."

He pauses for a moment. "Of course, if that happened, that day would also be the day Spider-man ends."

Monika tries to read Megaira's expression, but can't. She takes a deep breath, looks off to the side for a few moments, and then looks back at the girl in front of her.

"We need to put the screwdriver handle together with the tip. I mean, I'm assuming that's what those two things are. We also need to turn off the water to room 501 so we can get the wrench. After that, we pick up the last apple using the screwdriver (which our two missing friends have part of) and the wrench, all meet up here, and then one of us gets left behind."

"And you seem to know a lot about me. Are you like me, or are you like everyone else here? Have you seen... Well, you know, I'm sure."

Edgeworth smiled slightly at Spider-Man's explanation.

"I see. It's good to know where you stand on the issue, Spider-Man."

Spider-Man wrote:"Of course, if that happened, that day would also be the day Spider-man ends."

Edgeworth's smile faded.

"I take it by that you mean you'd resign from your job in order to take some time to find yourself — not that you'd actually kill yourself. Right?"

Edgeworth's face remained serious, but showed some curiosity as he eyed Aleka, who was once again showing more insight than expected.

"There's been some talk in my city about whether we should reintroduce juries into our legal system. What do you think about juries, Aleka?"

His eyes glued to the nearest Shadow, Akechi responded to Junko's inane comments with a surprisingly casual tone for a guy who was about to take on literal demons dressed as a Hetalia OC.

"Sorry, I must confess that I'm not all that familiar with my generation's pop artists. I think there was a Skywalker concert in downtown Tokyo once, but I'm far too busy working to socialise after eight."

The closest Parvati was edging forwards even as he spoke, eventually leaping towards the detective with razor-sharp nails. There was clearly a lack of cohesion or strategy here. Even so, Akechi deftly side-stepped the creature and gripped its small wrist. The Shadow showed signs of being in significant pain from the get go, but this did not last long. In one quick flourish, Goro twisted the enemy towards him and put it into a choke hold, before slitting its throat with his saber.

For a moment, the thing looked as though it was going to bleed to death, but what poured out was black and hateful. All the other Shadows froze upon seeing this and began formulating a different plan of action. One of the Baphomet demons began muttering some kind of spell under its breath, before casting its ugly limb outwards.

The action was simple but it had an impressive effect. Large crystals formed over Akechi's saber arm, freezing it in place and preventing him from attacking with it. Making a sort of awkward, pained grunt, the boy clasped the area with his free limb and yelled loudly.

"Ggh..! Robin Hood!"

Without a word of warning, a fantastic figure in white and gold manifested behind Akechi and cast its own magical retribution. The Shadow was immediately engulfed in blazing light and screeched as it perished.

The Persona, however, remained hovering in the air as the crystals over Akechi's arm began to shatter.

"Merciful, albeit needlessly so. I'm familiar with Sinatra, by the way, and a few of the other greats of his time."

Re: Descend - An Escape Adventure

Junko groaned, fairly loudly this time, the more she heard Akechi speak. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. The demons were crowding them and attacked the detective, but her focus was elsewhere. Akechi's admission that he knew nothing about Star Wars left her legitimately speechless.

Speechless in an obvious figurative way, of course. There was no way she wasn't going to voice her opinion about that disaster of a boy.

"Are YOU fuckin' serious!? You're telling me, you, consciously, willingly, unironically bring a lightsaber into a fucking fight, and YOU don't know what Star Wars is!? That's not a subversion! It's just fucking bullshit!"

If the demon hadn't launched at Akechi to attack him Junko might've done it herself. She watched her companion slit the monstruous woman's throat impassively, despite the fire in her eyes. Without realizing it, she had started tapping the floor with her boot in a constant rhythm, a sign of bottled up energy that needed to be released.

When the giant humanoid spawned right behind Akechi, chains linking the two of them, she paused this movement, if only to look upwards. The surprise had somewhat cooled down the nagging frustration that plagued her mind, and the need to know more sprouted once again in her head.

Junko had had enough of that observing bullshit for today, sadly. She slapped her forehead hard enough to make that curiosity wither temporarily, and so she jumped into action.

"Honestly, you said this would be simple, but you're taking way too long for me! Is it really okay to have a fight with small fry drag out this long? Not to mention your terrible knowledge of pop culture... Are you even human, Akechi-kun?"

The detective's arm seemed to be miraculously healing by the hand of which he had called Robin Hood, who still hovered in the air in silence. Junko walked forwards right under him, taking a quick glance upwards, but continuing her way to Akechi in a blink. The detective stood still, probably still dazed by the ice, and Junko used that opportunity to lean down and take the gun he was holstering on his hip in an strangely expert motion.

"You're gonna let me have some fun too."

Saying that, and with her body still facing Akechi's side, she raised her arm, took aim and shot at one of the remaining demons.

The woman received a clean shot, the recoil sending her head back, and she clawed at the wound as her form started waning. The horrific screech that came out from what remained from the creature was as gruesome as the ones the detective had drawn just before. Junko smiled at him, then looked down at the gun in her grasp. She felt it with both hands then, apparently inspecting it and not liking what she found. She made a dissaproving noise and glared at Akechi again.

"seriously... this is plastic as well... why are you still playing with toys? ah... to be stuck with a real chuuni... it's an abstract kind of despair."

As Goro was tending to his wounds, his attention somewhat diverted, Robin Hood's oddly proportioned head snapped sideways to monitor Junko's movements. Although he felt her disarming him, the boy did not seem particularly worried, just somewhat exasperated. Although she could have simply asked to use the ray gun, Akechi was more than aware that the fashionista had her own way of doing things.

“Well, I'm sure I'd be rather vexed,” he stated as he set his Persona forth to grapple with one of the oncoming enemy Shadows, tearing it limb from limb, “but you seem to understand how this works just fine.”

At this point, Robin Hood had pinned the last floating Baphomet, by its throat, against the wall and Akechi moved in for the kill. He swerved around the fairy demon with a movement that appeared to have been trained over time and stabbed through his familiar, which vanished almost instantly. The Baphomet writhed chaotically, its hands stretching out with murderous intent as it was impaled and light began to set its body aflame.

Before long, there was nothing left and the last Parvati standing had run out of juice. It made one last ditch effort to rush the Phantom Thief in white, but Robin Hood batted it aside roughly with a fist tinted by dark energy. Its weakness hit square-on, the fairy fell straight to the ground.

“Point that thing at it,” Akechi spoke aloud to Junko, crouching down to meet the Parvati's eye.

Junko glanced at Akechi, and uncharacteristically, shrugged and did as she was told. Her gaze was fixed on the creature before her, the darkness from the previous attack fading.

"H-Hey now!" shrieked the Shadow under Junko's crosshairs, raising its arms slightly and going very pale. "You're not really gonna shoot me, are you?"

"That's a good question."

"I suppose we could let you go, provided you can give us something in return."

"Wh-what? What do you mean?" the Parvati stammered. It winced sharply as Akechi drew nearer, lording his height advantage over the Shadow's weakened form and sighing pitifully.

"I mean, empty your figurative pockets if you value your miserable life."

"Yes, of course! I d-didn't mean to... Here! Just take this and let me leave!" cried the Shadow, manifesting a small, flat tin and holding it at arm's length. Tucked under it were a handful of yen notes and some mixed coins.

Goro reached across to take the items and read the label on the tin out loud, squinting as he did so.

"What is this? Plant balm? God, I should have lowered my fucking expectations."

The detective in white strode back towards Junko with a foul look on his face and stuffed the tin into a pocket. Looking his partner dead in the eye for the briefest of moments, Akechi nodded back towards the brightly-coloured creature hastily gathering its bearings.

Junko raised her eyebrows. It's the least she could do to acknowledge Akechi's sudden change in demeanor. When she saw the signal, she nodded and pulled the trigger at the creature crawling on the floor. A single shot to the middle of her forehead had the demon dissolve back into dark smoke.

"Hm... That was..."

The silence between them was hard to break, countless questions swirling in the air but better left unsaid. Junko turned back to Akechi when the deed was done, and handed him his ray pistol back. If he were looking at her right then, he would've noticed the wide smile that suddenly covered her face.

"So... Do you usually act like that in front of the ladies, or are these monsters an exception?"
